TW: Rape, Stalking
Sequioa Huff, 19, of Atlanta, GA was raped on May 13th of this year. Fortunately, she was able to go the hospital to get a forensic exam directly after the attack. She then reported the crime to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Department where she disclosed all evidence she had, including pictures of the criminal.
She was told that if she wanted the case to go any further, she was responsible for getting him to admit to his crime.
Although Sequioa had blocked her rapist on social media, he somehow continued to find a way to contact her. He was relentless in his attempts to get in touch with her, so she called the police again. They told her that because she didn’t have identifying information, such as his name or date of birth, there was nothing they could do.
Instead of actually doing their job to protect Sequioa, they encouraged her to engage with this criminal. She was told that if she wanted the case to go any further, she was responsible for getting him to admit to his crime. Being as determined as she was to get justice, she decided to try. Eventually, he ended up confessing to the rape both through text and on a recorded phone call.
Survivors deserve advocacy and protection, but the Clayton County Sheriff’s Department has shown her nothing but neglect.
Now that she‘s gathered this evidence, though it doesn’t seem like the police are concerned, she is in search of an attorney. Realizing that the cost of hiring legal representation can be expensive, she created this GoFundMe on June 13th. At that point, which was a month after she filed the police report, she had still not heard any updates from the police.
It is now yet another month later, and Sequioa has not updated the fundraiser. Reading about how astonishingly self sufficient she’s had to be throughout this painful process baffled me. Survivors deserve advocacy and protection, but the Clayton County Sheriff’s Department has shown her nothing but neglect.
She’s nearly halfway to her goal of $6000 and could use any help, any amount, any like share or retweet. Please click on the link below to contribute. Thank you!
